Praises, travel mercies:
Cathy Clement is in Alabama this weekend. Praise for a happy 16th birthday for Miss Veronica and travel mercies for Cathy's safe return.
We pray for travel mercies for all those 'on the road' this coming Christmas season: the McManameys, Phil Ridgway and Susan Fitzhugh, the Benfields are on the road this weekend.
We had a visitor to our class this Sunday: Vaughan Kennedy. Vaughan and Peggy Kennedy joined Potomac Crest last Sunday.
Prayers:
Please keep praying for Doug's mom's long-term recovery. Also the McManamey family members.
We are also praying for Phil Ridgway's brother, suffering from depression.
Please keep praying for all the needs in our church, and for God's will to continue to be manifest in what our Potomac Crest church community does to serve.
Angie Blanton asked that we pass the word. Next Sunday 12/20 at 2 p.m., the Angel Tree volunteers will be getting together to distribute the presents collected for children in need. Angie says they could use more volunteers to help with the distribution.
Also, John Flowers asked that we include the following request. Many of our Sunday School classes choose a mission, something they want to work toward. Please be in prayer for our class as we attempt to figure out if we are ready to choose something to be involved in, and if so what it might be. All ideas are, of course, welcome.

By the Book Prayer Requests for Sunday 12/6/2009
Praises, travel mercies:
Pastor Doug and Deb are back home from transporting his mother from Florida to Tennessee, where she will be with his sister.
John Flowers gave praise -- everyone in his extended family is doing better, and only one is currently in the hospital.
Phil Ridgway also gave thanks -- his work situation is not resolved, but it is clearly more stable than it has been.
Larry Springer gave praises: his wife Nora is back home, and doing well.
Phil and Sue will be on the road this coming Sunday, traveling to Pennsylvania to be with family.
Cathy Clement will be traveling to Alabama this coming weekend. Her daughter Veronica will have her 16th birthday on the 14th, and long story short needs her mother.
We pray for travel mercies for all those 'on the road' this coming Christmas season.
Prayers:
Please keep praying for Doug's mom's long-term recovery. She has damage to her liver, and maintaining liver function will be a problem.
The McManameys mentioned Claudia's sister Roberta, with a broken kneecap from a fall. She will not need surgery. Also, their granddaughter Kathryn; she is suffering from a very painful kidney stone.
Phil Ridgway asked for prayers for his brother, suffering from depression. Please pray that he will find guidance, and for patience for Phil and Sue.

By the Book Prayer Requests for Sunday 11/29/2009
Praises, travel mercies:
Everyone will be traveling back from Thanksgiving visits with family. We pray for travel mercies for our church family and neighbors, that everyone gets home safe and without incident.
Pastor and Deb are on their way back home; Doug's mother is stable in his sister's home in Chattanooga, and will soon begin physical therapy rehab for her hip fracture.
John and Lydia Flowers had JK's fiancee, Crystal Pugh, come for an introductory visit. All went well...
Prayers:
Please keep praying for Doug's mom's long-term recovery. She has damage to her liver, and maintaining liver function will be a problem.
Larry Springer asked for prayers for Nora, his wife. She has been admitted for mental illness and will have a hearing on Monday. On the positive side, Larry reports she has participated willingly in her therapy, which is a good sign. He is looking forward to Nora getting her medication adjustment and a gradual recovery. Pray for both Nora and Larry.
Please keep Phil Ridgway in your prayers for his continuing job search.
This Thanksgiving we are especially thankful for the troops defending us overseas, putting themselves in harm's way to protect our freedoms. We remember their sacrifice and pray for their safe return, and for the health and well-being of their families. Please don't forget that they sacrifice so much to serve our country and protect all of us.
Please keep praying for all the needs in our church, and for God's will to continue to be manifest in what our Potomac Crest church community does.
A SPECIAL NOTE: I sent out a note a couple of weeks ago, asking if you wanted me to keep you on this prayer request list even if you are not in this particular Sunday School class. One or two of you have asked to be removed, but others have asked to be kept on. So I will keep you on the mailing list unless you tell me otherwise. And if someone from the other groups wants to add prayer requests you can mail me, or start your own mail list, or add to the blog. Please let me know if someone wants to do any of the above things. As I said before, it's no additional effort to include you; just a few extra electrons. I'd rather, however, meet our prayer needs, and not just clog up your email.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 11/15/09
A SPECIAL NOTE: We've been doing this prayer request list for a while, and since we started we split our Sunday School class into three groups. We hope our groups will all grow and flourish. However, we're not getting prayer requests out for two-thirds of you, and two-thirds of you may just be deleting this message before reading it [In which case, as Cathy reminds me, you won't be reading this message either... :-)]. Anyhow, please let me (John C.) know a) whether you want to continue receiving this message, b) whether you'd like to contribute prayer requests.
It's no additional effort to include you, mind you; just a few extra electrons. I'd rather, however, meet our prayer needs, and not just clog up your email.
Praises, travel mercies:
Cathy Clement is back from a weekend trip to visit her daughter in Alabama. She was missed.
Rhonda Pierce has become a great aunt! Her niece Kristyn gave birth last week to a baby boy.
Prayers:
We've all heard that Pastor Doug's mom is suffering from liver failure and having trouble recovering from a broken hip. They have now got her stabilized and are driving her back from Florida to Tennessee to be cared for by his sister. It may be a couple of weeks yet before Doug and Deb feel they can return. We are praying for the family and for better health for Doug's mother.
Phil Ridgway is continuing a job search. The contract he's working on is ending, and he may be laid off. He has prospects, but some of them may require that they move. Please pray for success in his job search; Sue asks that God place them where He wants them to be. Also pray for Phil's brother-in-law, now in his fourth month of unemployment in the Newport News area...
John Flowers' court case, continued to November 18, involving a home contractor. We pray for a fair disposition.
The McManameys'son-in-law John is still looking for an employment opportunity that will bring in enough income to support his family.
Please keep praying for all the needs in our church, and for God's will to continue to be manifest in what our Potomac Crest church community does.

The Health Fair last Saturday was a success. Praise to the Women's Ministry for organizing this event. Many people registered for the Bone Marrow database, hoping to help Bill Rickard find a match for a needed bone marrow transplant.
The McManamey's grandson Ryan is making a strong recovery from his accident; he is back in school, and his eyes are recovering; he is expected to make a full recovery.
Prayers:
George Bohr (Betty's husband, and Leanne Gillespie's dad) passed away Saturday morning. Please pray for the Bohr and Gillespie families.
Please continue to keep Larry Springer and his wife Nora in your prayers. Her condition has not improved.
John Flowers has a court case, now continued to November 18, involving a home contractor. We pray for a fair disposition.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 11/1/09
Praises, travel mercies:
Friday night Harvest Festival was very well attended and, by all accounts, a huge success! Thanks very much to all who helped, especially Cathy Clement (who got roped into this upon John getting the flu -- the swine!) and the rest of the group who set up, cleaned up, staffed the booths and stands, made chili and cooked hot dogs, and donated baked goods.
John and Lydia Flowers are back from their cruise; John allowed it had been 28 years since they were able to spend any significant time alone together. They had a wonderful time!
Valerie says her family is doing better, dealing with the death of her father Fred Castle.
Prayers:
The McManamey extended family are going through a very rough patch. Granddaughter Tory was abused for the past two years by her biological father, Tara's ex-husband. Son-in-law Judd is battling anger issues, and Tory and Tara will have to testify this Monday in New York. Meanwhile, son John is still trying to find a job or to increase his income. And grandson Ryan was injured Saturday at a church social -- a misfiring game led to him being hit in the face, breaking two bones and swelling his eyes shut. He's in a lot of pain. We pray for everyone.
The Health Fair is on Saturday Nov. 7. One of the activities will be a bone marrow screening, to see if a compatible donor can be found for a transplant for Eileen Kramer's brother. Only need a cheek swab, but you do have to be between 18-60 years of age.
Please continue to keep Larry Springer and his wife Nora in your prayers. Her condition has not improved.
Events:
Our class has been asked to provide a basket as a door prize for the Health Fair, and we thank Claudia McManamey for putting together a Christmas -movie-themed basket, with two or three movies, some popcorn, and the makings for cider. Those of us who want to help cover the cost should let Claudia know.
Please keep praying for all the needs in our church, and for God's will to continue to be manifest in what our Potomac Crest church community does.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday10/18/09
Praises, travel mercies:
The McManameys (Jim and Claudia) will be going to North Carolina to visit their daughter Tara and husband Judd. Wish them safe travels and a speedy return; I (John C.) will be teaching in place of Jim, and he will be welcomed back with open arms...
Prayers:
Rhonda Pierce's cousin Penny, for whom we had been praying, passed away this past week. Please pray for the Pierces to find strength, and also for Penny's daughter, Tiffany, who is 16. Also, Jim added Rhonda's daughter Brittany to the prayer list last week; we pray Rhonda can bring Brittany back into their relationship and help her find salvation.
We are also praying for Valerie Dinwiddie and her family; her father, Fred Castle, passed away after losing his battle with pneumonia and other problems. He is healed and in a better place, but his family feels the loss.
Please continue to keep Larry Springer and his wife Nora in your prayers. Her condition has not improved.
Events:
Our class has been asked to provide a basket as a door prize for the Health Fair, and Claudia McManamey offered to put together a Christmas -movie-themed basket, with two or three movies, some popcorn, and the makings for cider. The Fair is November 7th; those of us who want to help with the basket -- or help cover the cost -- should let Claudia know.
Also, the church's Fall Festival celebration will be October 30th (Friday), and Becky Bolton asked if we would try to assemble a booth for the Festival, especially if it could be themed for the K-5th grade crowd. John C. gulped and offered to give it a shot. Anyone with more experience than me at such things, please help. I will try to think about possible booth games that boys and girls aged 5-10 years would like; right now, Cathy has suggested a tub of slime that contestants would dig into to find balls they could exchange for a small prize.
Please keep praying for all the needs in our church, and for God's will to continue to be manifest in what our Potomac Crest church community does.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday10/04/09
Praises, travel mercies:
We're back in the Sanctuary! It looked beautiful. People did a lot of work getting everything clean, seats set up, the flags up, the audio system all in order... thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen.
A wonderful singing quartet, the Gospel Heirs, participated in the service on Sunday. We thank God for their wonderful voices.
The Flowers and Clement families will be on travel next week -- actually, the Flowerses will be away for three weeks.
Jim and Claudia McManamey were away; their son-in-law John Barbee was preaching this Sunday.
Prayers:
Rhonda Pierce asked for prayers for her cousin, dying of cancer.
Also, Cathy Clement asked for prayers for her sister, Rhonda Ivey, who is suffering from high blood pressure, cellulitis and has a low platelet count. We ask for God's will in helping Rhonda to better health.
Please keep Larry Springer and his wife, Nora in your prayers. There is still no change in her condition.
Also, please keep praying for John Barbee, the McManameys' son-in-law, for success in his job search.
Please keep praying for the needs of other people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will to be manifest in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 9/27/09
Praises, travel mercies:
Pastor and Deb Duty taking their grandchildren back to their mother in Kentucky, and returning to Virginia this Wednesday.
This coming weekend, with God's help, we will be worshipping in the built-out sanctuary. It's all ready -- except for getting the dust off the musical instruments and retuning them, reconnecting the sound system, adding temporary seating, putting the flags back up, and other touches... we can use the help, folks. If you have time to give, please contact Joe Herod at the church.
John Flowers mentioned that his son JK has found an apartment in Chesapeake, in the Newport News area; he is fifteen minutes from his work and the rent is within his budget. He is happy and grateful.
Prayers:
Craig and Eileen Kramer asked for prayers for her brother Bill Rickard (who joined our church a couple of weeks ago) and has found out he needs a bone marrow transplant. Also a nephew, Stephen (age 19) who has colitis.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for continuing prayers for her father, still struggling with a lung infection.
The Wheelers are struggling with disease and pain. TJ is getting over a bad cold and keeping up with AWANA and Sean; Andy is in considerable pain with his knee, and eagerly awaiting replacement of his other knee -- on October 19th. Please keep them in your prayers.
Larry Springer asks for continued prayers for Nora, his wife. There is no change in her condition yet.
Jim McManamey asked for prayers for Claudia. She fell on the stairs, and is sore and bruised. Fortunately nothing was broken.
John Flowers asked for continuing prayers for his sister Shirley Harris, coping with her husband's death due to a drunk driver. Pray for the family to come together and reach positive decisions, and for peace and comfort for Shirley.
Jim McManamey mentioned his son-in-law John Barbee; the family has had very little income for the last few months since he was laid off. He had an interview for a job at HUD a week ago, but has not heard anything. Please pray for success in his job search.
Please keep praying for the needs of other people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will to be manifest in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 9/13/09
Praises:
Praises for AWANA, starting this past Wednesday! TJ Wheeler mentioned there were 87 clubbers present, and 38 leaders. TJ said she had gotten a lot of favorable comments and emails from parents.
This may be our last week for services in the new Fellowship Hall. The builders hope to have the sanctuary built out by this coming Thursday; if everything works out, and with sufficient volunteer help, we may be in the sanctuary next Sunday. God is good... all the time.
Jim McManamey reminds everyone that the Truth Project group started meeting this past Friday evening at their home. The Truth Project is a DVD-based course on the Christian worldview; there is room for more folks to participate. Please contact Jim about joining.
Prayers:
I forgot to add one more prayer request, from Patty Tucker. She writes to keep her niece Amber in our prayers: My niece Amber needs to have surgery to remove a mass in her abdomen this month. Her health insurance expires in Oct. and she is unable to get into John Hopkins until mid to late September. She is home on IV 's for now. Thanks for everyone's prayers.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for continuing prayers for her father, who has a lung infection that is not responding to oral antibiotics. He saw an infectious disease specialist last week. The bacterial infection he has is masked by his other symptoms, and doctors are saying they must wait to treat him until the infection's symptoms get worse. They have to keep him without treatment until he gets worse; they can then culture the bacteria and decide on a treatment.
Andy Wheeler will be having surgery -- replacement of his other knee -- on October 19th.
Larry Springer asked for continued prayers for Nora, his wife. There is no change in her condition yet.
Cathy Clement asked for prayers for her daughter Veronica's friend Samantha, who suffered a broken nose in a Color Guard accident last Friday and will need plastic surgery. Also, Veronica witnessed an apparent stroke suffered by a customer at a store where she is working, and is praying for the customer's recovery.
Claudia McManamey said they are praying for a niece of her daughter-in-law, Abigail (age 7), who fell and broke her arm right at the wrist.
Please keep praying for the Heart Walk -- the youth and the Boltons will be hiking 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail next weekend to raise money for the American Heart Association. There is a sign-up sheet.
Also, Nancy Farischon is starting up the Children's Choir this Sunday. Children from age 5 through seventh grade are welcome; they practice for a Christmastime performance. Children and grandchildren are welcome!
Let's not forget to keep praying for the needs of people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 9/6/09
Praises, travel mercies:
Travel mercies for the Benfields, coming back this week from vacation. Also, Eileen Kramer took their daughter Laura as far as Atlanta, on her way to Pensacola Christian College; Eileen will fly back home from Atlanta.
We welcome Doug and Brenda Leivonen, visitors to our class.
Praises for AWANA! Eric Zerkle reports are now 30 T&Ters signed up (grades 3 to 6), and thirteen members have signed up to help; and similar numbers in all the other age groups. The Open House went well this past Wednesday, and they expect many more children to sign up this coming Wednesday in time for the first class. Please keep everyone in your prayers, for the children to be safe and unhurt and for many to be led to Christ. [Help is needed to paint the circle before Wednesday.]
Prayers:
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for prayers for her father, who has a lung infection that is not responding to oral antibiotics. He will be seeing an infectious disease specialist this week. They are trying to find out what other antibiotic will work, and they have to keep him off antibiotics for ten days to be able to culture what he has. They are trying to avoid putting him back in the hospital.
Larry Springer asked for continued prayers for Nora, his wife. There is no change in her condition yet.
Becky and Jason Bolton and a group of the youth will be hiking 30 miles of the Appalachian Trail the weekend of September 19-20, to raise money for the American Heart Association. Please see one of the youth or Jason or Becky if you want to sign up to contribute.
Jim and Claudia McManamey are dealing with the recovery of their dog from serious surgery.
Phil and Lisa Qualls asked for prayers for their son Travis, bitten by a dog yesterday while trying to rescue their pet from a fight in a dog park. Doctors will be checking for infection, but so far his hand seems OK.
Remember to pray for our school children: school starts in Prince William County this Tuesday (also in Fairfax).
Let's not forget to keep praying for the needs of people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 8/30/09
Praises, travel mercies:
Lillian Shank offered praises for Doug's knee, now completely healed. Doug and Lillian thank everyone who prayed for his recovery.
Valerie Dinwiddie is back from the family vacation, and her parents stayed healthy all week. Praises all around.
Craig Kramer asked for travel mercies for Eileen and their daughter Laura, heading back to college this week.
Kim Glasoe praised the Holy Spirit for leading a coworker to accept Christ through him. Jim Church was to have come to the late service this past Sunday.
Jim McManamey offered thanks and praises to everyone who helped get the youth supper going last week. Eileen Kramer got everyone organized, and Mike Benfield paid for the pizza. (If you feel led, pitch a few bucks at Mike or Eileen; our class had offered to help with this supper, and then we forgot to bring it up last week.)
We had two couples as guests this Sunday: Don and Sandy Carmichael, and John and Sheila Webb. Thanks for visiting!
We offer praise in advance for anyone stepping forward with snacks for the next two weeks. We have folks signed up for 9/20 (McManameys); 9/27 (Kramers); and 10/4 (the Pierces), but no one for 9/6 or 9/13.
Prayers:
Rhonda Pierce asked for prayers for a friend of her niece, who has just been diagnosed with leukemia, and the doctors believe it may be fatal. Please pray for strength for the friend and her family, and for God's will.
Lisa Glasoe mentioned her father, suffering from a kidney infection.
Patty Tucker asked for her niece, Amber Lewis (who's been on this list before). She's gone back to Johns Hopkins to have more masses surgically removed.
Don't forget to pray for AWANA! Open House is this Wednesday. Please pray that we look like we are ready, says Heather Zerkle. Eric mentioned that two male leaders had stepped forward this Sunday. We also will be looking for help in building the AWANA circle for games this coming weekend.
Larry Springer asked for prayers for his wife, Nora. She has regressed in her bipolar disorder, apparently having halved her medical regimen and needing to get back on her medication. Larry also mentioned he'd suffered bee stings and lots of ticks this past week.
The Kramers asked for prayers for a family from their former church -- the Torreses are having trouble.
Anita Hampton said her doctor had recommended a hysterectomy; she will know a date within the next two weeks. Please keep praying for a positive result.
Cathy Clement asked for prayers for her brother-in-law, Chris Oler, battling diabetes and spikes in his blood sugar. This week he will be having his gall bladder removed.
Rod Davis mentioned the "See You at the Pole" rally, Sept. 23; an adult version of this youth rally is to be held at the Prince William County Complex (on the Prince William County Parkway) at 7 a.m. on Wednesday 9/23. The rally will offer prayer; the scripture theme is Psalms 80:3: "O God, restore us, And cause Thy face to shine upon us, and we will be saved." [I couldn't locate a Web resource for this event; Pastor Doug may have more information.]
Jim McManamey also reminded us about the Truth Project group that will be meeting on Friday evenings in their home.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 8/23/09
Praises, travel mercies:
We celebrate the occupancy of the Faith wing! We met in our new classroom this Sunday; we will be a bit crowded for a few weeks until the remodeling of the Fellowship hall is concluded and more classrooms open up; but we had a very good discussion.
Leah Gillespie came to church with her new baby. We congratulate her and grandparents Bob and Leanne for God's gift of a beautiful baby girl.
Travel mercies for the Benfields, on the road for the next week. And we're glad Phil Ridgeway is back safe from his bike road trips.
Prayers:
Doug Shank's knee is almost completely healed. Keep praying for his full recovery.
Jason and Angie Blanton asked for prayers for their son Dillon, who's been suffering with diarrhea for a number of days.
Eric Zerkle asked for prayers for himself and his fellow Pentagon budget officers -- it's budget (2010-2011) season and there is a lot of work to be done. [That goes for budget officers all over the Federal government, including Cathy Clement.]
Eric also mentioned his cousin Marvin Suhu and the whole Suhu family; he's been in bed long enough to develop a serious bedsore. Marvin is trying to get his body healed enough for him to travel from Hawaii to California.
Phillip Ridgeway mentioned his father. He's been off his heart medication; his doctors are trying to diminish his medicine to see if he is healthy enough to withstand a double knee replacement. We pray for discernment and health for Phil's dad.
Eileen Kramer asked for continuing prayers for her brother Bill and Shari, his wife. Bill is facing a painful bone marrow test at the end of this week; there is still no clear diagnosis. His blood red cell levels are still low. Please pray for discernment and for healing.
Lisa Qualls mentioned a situation at work, in which she has had to act as an advocate for another person who was the victim of a third person's improper behavior. The third person was fired, and Lisa feels the burden of the firing even though the punishment was for a second offense. Please pray for peace of mind for Lisa and the victim.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for prayers for her Mom and Dad. This is the week her family is on vacation, and the parents are home alone and in delicate health. Pray for them to stay healthy.
Anita Hampton sees her doctor this Monday for a diagnosis and way forward. Please pray for discernment and positive results.
Let's not forget to keep praying for the needs of people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.
We are still collecting Bibles and Christian books to send to India to the IBL. And we're collecting for Sunday School supplies for the new classrooms -- any spare change will help.

Praises, travel mercies:
Jeremi and Morgan Ellis are celebrating the birth of their baby daughter! (Jeremi and his parents are on our 8:30 a.m. praise team).
John and JK Flowers give praise for safe travel (JK back from a wonderful mission trip to South Africa, with thanks to all who prayed for him while there).
Doug Shank is out of the hospital and doing much better. He was at church on Sunday.
And we had a grand picnic after the 11 a.m. service. There was fun and fellowship and much food -- some forty people or more. Thanks to all who came and joined our happy throng.
Travel mercies for the Benfields, on the road for the next couple of weeks. Also Phil Ridgeway, on the road on his bike again.
Prayers:
Eileen Kramer asked for continuing prayers for her brother Bill, no clear diagnosis yet. His blood red cell levels are still low. He may be having an immune system reaction to some of the drugs he's taking. They will be doing a bone marrow exam. Please pray for discernment and for healing. Also their friend Bill Blecka, with esophageal cancer: his mother was visiting this week, and suddenly passed away from a heart attack. Pray for strength for the family.
Mike Benfield said daughters Abigail and Katie Lynn will be homeschooled this year. Tonia will change her nursing schedule to an on-call status, and is aiming for work on the weekends so she can be with the children during weekdays. Please pray for her to get the schedule they need, and for success in this effort.
Eric Zerkle mentioned his cousin Marvin, still in hospital. He asks for prayers for his healing, and especially for Marvin's wife Suzanne; in recent weeks Eric feels her attitude toward the Lord has softened and she may accept Christ as her savior.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for prayers for her Mom and Dad. The family is going on the road for a week for a much-needed vacation, and the parents will be home alone and are in delicate health. Pray for them to stay healthy this week.
JK Flowers' fiancee, Krystal, is looking for teaching jobs in Georgia. Please pray for success in this effort.
Claudia McManamey asked for prayers for their grandaughter Kathryn Barbie; she's been having some high fevers, and will need an exam this week.
The Blantons asked for prayers for Jason's brother-in-law Chad Brady. He has possible meningitis, and will be getting a spinal tap this week.
Susan Fitzhugh mentioned Phil Ridgeway's brother-in-law Donnie, recently laid off. Please pray for success in his job hunt.
We pray for all the students headed off to college starting this week; may they stay well and strengthen their spirits as well as their minds.
Lisa Glasoe asked for prayers for Ms. Doan, a friend of the family living in Florida (she's in her 80s). She fell last night, and has been in and out of consciousness. Please pray for healing and strength in her recovery.
Please keep praying for this year's AWANA program at PCBC. There is still need for help in the Puggles program (3-4 year-olds) and the Cubbies (the next group up). There is also a need for men to volunteer for the boys in the Sparks (grades 1-2) and the T&T program (grades 3-6).
TJ Wheeler says they also need volunteers to work registration and for the open house on September 2nd and for the Wednesdays in September as kids come to join us.
Let's not forget to keep praying for the needs of people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 8/9/09
Praises, travel mercies:
Anita Hampton and Lisa Qualls went to Hershey, PA to hear Joyce Meyer -- reported it was a wonderful experience. Dave Meyer (Joyce's husband) talked about patriotism, and they said he was great, also.
Leanne Gillespie reported the birth of their granddaughter on 8/3 -- a beautiful healthy girl.
Don Marks (plays the trombone in the early service praise team) thanked us for prayers. His wife's knee surgery was successful. She's been up and down, but Saturday and Sunday she was able to walk without a cane, and the swelling has gone down.
Travel mercies: the Zerkles, the Lavignes; also, Jill Rumble is on her way back from Indiana by train.
Prayers:
Leanne Gillespie asked for prayers for their daughter. After a long period in labor, she ended up needing a Cesarean to deliver her baby. Her blood platelets are low, and she's been having trouble. Please pray for her full recovery.
Lillian Shank asked for prayers for Doug, her husband. He has cellulitis (a serious skin infection) in his legs, and is in the hospital (Potomac?) on intravenous antibiotics.
Eileen Kramer asked for prayers for her brother Bill, going to the doctor on Monday for a diagnosis. She also mentioned a friend from their old church in Wisconsin, Lydia George; she has had a recurrence of a brain tumor, and it isn't known if it is cancerous. Please pray for discernment and for healing.
If you have spare time on the week of August 17th, don't forget there will be plenty of tasks as we try to settle in to the new space. Please lend a hand to Joe Herod and the crew; anytime after 8 a.m. Painting, cleaning ... all sorts of fun. Also, be thinking about colors for our new classroom's walls.
And don't forget our picnic after the 11 a.m. service next Sunday! Lisa will be sending out an announcement to remind everyone of what they promised to cook/bring.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 7/26/09
Praises, travel mercies:
John Flowers said he had talked again with JK, in training and already doing counseling on his mission trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. John and Lydia are on travel next week, to a wedding in Connecticut; pray for travel mercies.
Also traveling: Doug and Lillian Shank's youngest daughter Sarah, on her way back from Mississippi with her aunt.
Also TJ Wheeler had to travel to Washington state this week to deal with a death in her family. She should be returning early this week. We know Andy and Sean miss her.
Claudia McManamey gave thanks: their newest grandson Oliver passed his hearing tests with no problems. She also mentioned their son-in-law Judd, who retired from the Marines this week; he gave a very moving retirement speech, Claudia said, about keeping your promises to the Lord.
Anita Hampton offered a huge praise for her sister Lisa Qualls, who had a successful radio interview on the new book on a late-night show this past week. She also gave praises for Lisa's husband Phillip, who got on the phone and arranged for the interview.
Cathy Clement offered thanks for a colleague at work -- Tracy had surgery for fibroids this past week, and is feeling much better. Also, John Flowers offered thanks; he had been suffering knee pains, and has had much relief this past week.
Valerie Dinwiddie offered thanks for her father. He saw his lung specialist a couple of weeks ago, and lungs still sound clear. He saw his cardiologist this past week, and his heart is keeping rhythm, BP is good. The next day he saw his oncologist: the cancer is not growing at this time and there is no need for chemotherapy. He does have trouble breathing when he exerts himself in any way. Hopefully, with all this good news and the removal of the fluid in his legs, he will be able to regain some of his mobility and strength and his appetite.
Prayers:
Heather and Eric Zerkle asked for prayers for a family friend, Kathy Saunders. She had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but it has now been found to have spread to her lungs and liver. She is not saved; please pray for salvation, for God's will in healing and for her family.
Don Marks (plays the trombone in the early service praise team) asked that we put his wife Surina on our prayer list; she will have knee surgery this week for a torn meniscus. As this heals it may also help with the severe back pain she has been suffering.
Jim and Claudia McManamey asked for prayers for their daughter-in-law Kim; she had a sonogram of a lump in her throat, and either surgery or radiation therapy may be needed. With four children (including new baby Oliver), the family needs prayer and support.
Anita Hampton asked that we keep her in our prayers. She had a bad scare this week, with severe abdominal pains; appendicitis had been suspected, but it turned out that she has fibroid cysts. She has an ob-gyn specialist appointment on Tuesday, and a hysterectomy seems very likely.
We are also praying for Morgan Ellis and Jeremi (another member of the praise team). She is expecting soon, and has already shown signs of wanting to have Dakota arrive. She's back from the hospital, but they are keeping a close watch on mother and child.
Please keep praying for this year's AWANA program at PCBC. There is still need for help in the Puggles program (3-4 year-olds) and the Cubbies (the next group up).
There is also a need for men to volunteer for the boys in the T&T program (grades 3-6). TJ Wheeler says they also need volunteers to work registration and for the open house on September 2nd and for Wednesdays in September as kids come to join us.
Let's not forget to pray for the needs of people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.
Don't forget, we are still collecting Bibles and Christian books to send to India to the IBL. And we're collecting for Sunday School supplies for the new classrooms -- any spare change will help.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 7/19/09
Praises, travel mercies:
John Flowers said he had talked with his son JK, arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa on his mission trip. His training started this past Saturday.
The youth are back safe from camp at the Master's Inn. No one ws hurt or sick, so we give praise for a successful week.
Patty Tucker reports her friend Sherry Robertson (who lost a pair of twins very recently) is back to working with children and appears to be coping far better than expected. More thankful prayers.
Claudia McManamey mentioned her granddaughter Kathryn did not, after all, have mononucleosis, and left on her mission trip to Mexico. They will be building houses at some of the workers' encampments at the maquiladoras on the border.
Prayers:
Mike and Tonia Benfield asked for prayer for Aaron Tweedy, a local coach, and his children. His wife died this past week in an automobile accident, leaving Aaron and three small children behind.
Eileen Kramer asked for continuing prayer for her brother, Bill; his blood count is still puzzling and concerning his doctors.
Patty Tucker asked for continued prayers for her niece Amber Lewis, in Surgical ICU after some very difficult surgery. There were multiple blood sacs and fluid in her abdominal cavity. She was very close to leaving us Thursday night and Patty thanks everyone for their prayers. Amber still has high fever, and there are a lot of unanswered questions about her situation. We still need prayer for Amber's recovery and for family tension and anger as well.
Leanne and Bob Gillespie asked for prayers for their daughter; she is pregnant and due to deliver around August 9th, but her blood pressure spiked up last night to 168/89, and they are very concerned for both mother and child.
Kim Glasoe asked for prayers for his friend Dave Lance, battling throat cancer. He is very sick after chemotherapy.
Susan Fitzhugh asked for prayers for Phillip Ridgeway, on a sport bike ride to the mid-Ohio races with a group from the area. One of the party members already totalled his bike. They will be coming back Monday evening; pray for a safe return.
The McManamey's newest grandson, Oliver, did OK at his two-week checkup; his hearing test will be in a few weeks.
Please pray for Dorothy Barg, a member of our church. Her daughter Nancy Farischon said her mother has been taken to Potomac Hospital with extreme pain in her leg and foot. Nancy is out of state and asks for the prayers of her church family and friends.
Valerie Dinwiddie mentioned her father. He is doing well at present; he sees his cardiologist and oncologist this week. The cardiologist will decide if he can stand another round of therapy for his lung, and his oncologist will check to see if the tumor has grown and what therapy is needed.
Please be in prayer for this year's AWANA program at PCBC. Adult training began yesterday; there is still need for help in the Puggles program (3-4 year-olds) and the Cubbies (the next group up). There is also a need for men to volunteer for the boys in the T&T program (grades 3-6). Eric Zerkle said there have been many volunteers, but the program still needs more.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 7/12/09
Praises, travel mercies:
JK Flowers left this Sunday on his mission trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. We wish him a wonderful, transforming experience and will all be praying for him.
The youth are back on the road again -- this time to camp at the Master's Inn (for, I believe, a week). Please pray for travel mercies and a safe and meaningful retreat for them all.
Also on the road: Tonia Benfield and daughters Katie-Lynn and Abigail, on their way back from Texas.
Visitors to our class: Steve and Laura Terrell, welcome.
The Zerkles offered praises -- they have a tenant for their house in Arizona, and with a two-year lease!
Anita Hampton and Lisa Qualls offered praises for Phillip Qualls' birthday, and his brother Tyrone Qualls' as well, this week. Cathy and John Clement's second wedding anniversary on the 14th.
Prayers:
Eileen Kramer asked for prayer for her brother, Bill; his blood count has been declining, and doctors are very concerned.
Eric Zerkle asked for prayers; he had an eye examination appointment scheduled for Monday.
Patty Tucker asked for prayers for her family friend, Shari Robertson;
both twins were born very premature (they were due in October), and died shortly after birth. Please pray for the family.
Patty also asked for prayers for her niece Amber Lewis, hospitalized with a large mass in her abdomen. She was being transferred to the Women's Surgical Unit at Holy Cross Hospital Monday afternoon so she can be evaluated.
Angie Blanton asked for continued prayers for her father, recovering from prostatectomy. No sign of any cancer in the biopsy results.
Phil Ridgeway asked for prayers for his brother Marty, suffering from clinical depression.
John Clement asked folks to pray for the good friend of a coworker -- she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and was going in for exploratory surgery this Monday. Doctors think it is not the most aggressive kind of cancer.
Claudia and Jim McManamey asked for prayers for their newest grandson, Oliver. He failed his first hearing test (not very unusual at two weeks of age, but still worrisome). He will have to be reevaluated in a few weeks. Claudia also asked for prayers for another granddaughter -- she was due to leave this week on a mission trip to Mexico, but may have come down with mononucleosis.
Let's not forget to pray for the needs of people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking. In particular, please pray for our Children's Church ministry; there are currently only two adult volunteers running it, and they could really use more help.
Don't forget, we are still collecting Bibles and Christian books to send to India to the IBL.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 7/5/09
Praises, travel mercies:
The youth team got back on Friday night from their mission trip (it was only a week -- my mistake in the last prayer request mailing). There were some injuries resulting in trips to the emergency room, but nothing major and everyone is back safe. Pastor Jason said there was much fellowship and work for the glory of God.
Jim and Claudia McManamey offered praises for the birth of their eighth grandchild. Oliver Daniel McManamey, born on July 1, 8 lbs 1 oz.
Rhonda Pierce offered praises -- her husband Dwayne accompanied her to church and Sunday School today.
JK Flowers gave praise -- his 'little' brother has a new job, earning more money. JK is wrapping up his planning and packing for the mission trip to Johannesburg, South Africa; please pray for his dedication and success.
The Shanks offered praises for family friends Drew and Heather Campbell, back from their mission trip to Peru.
Heather and Eric Zerkle gave thanks -- their house in Arizona has three prospective tenant families. Pray that they make the right choice.
Kim and Lisa Glasoe have agreed to share teaching our Sunday School class; we give praise and thank them.
Prayers:
Eric Zerkle asked for prayers for his cousin Marvin Soohoo in Hawaii. He has been battling cancer, and has recently recovered from pneumonia. He needs prayers for healing.
Patty Tucker mentioned a family friend, Shari Robertson; she is expecting twins in October, and has a high-risk pregnancy due to diabetes. They're having trouble hearing one twin's heartbeat. Shari will have to remain in the hospital under close observation until the delivery. Please pray for the health of the twins and the mother and for a safe delivery.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 6/28/09
Praises, travel mercies:
The youth team left on a mission trip on Sunday at 5:30 a.m. Pray that they stay safe for these two weeks and work and serve as an example to everyone they meet in South Carolina.
Praise for this past week's Vacation Bible School! Pastor said, between 104 children registered and everyone helping, he counted over 170 participants on Thursday. We thank Deb Duty, Lydia Flowers, and all the folks who worked themselves to the bone to put on a wonderful week's event.
Larry and Nora Springer offered praises for their tenth (!) grandchild. Charlotte weighed in at 9 lbs., 2 ounces. [Her mother weighs under 100 pounds, so imagine how light she feels now.] Mother and child are well.
The Shanks asked for travel mercies for Drew and Heather Campbell, teenage friends of the family, on a mission trip to Peru.
Prayers:
Lisa Glasoe, whose dad was being considered for ongoing dialysis or a kidney transplant, has been judged a suitable candidate for transplantation and has been put on a transplant list. Please pray for a suitable candidate organ for him.
Rhonda Pierce asked for prayers for her family. Her daughter has been struggling with a bad breakup, and was on life support for a time; she has come through OK, but the family needs to pull together and a lot of prayer.
Heather and Eric Zerkle asked for prayer support. They need a renter for their house in Arizona -- ideally a successful, well-heeled, careful, rent-paying, quiet...
Helen Richards asked for prayers for her family. There are problems between family members. Please pray for reconciliation.
Angie Blanton gave praises that her father's prostate surgery went well; he is recovering without problems so far. The boys are going into the second week of North Carolina grandma camp, with the handover on Sunday between one grandma and the other.
Cathy Clement asked for prayers for her brother-in-law, Chris Oler. He turned up a blood sugar reading of 210, and his wife Lynne (Cathy's sister) is very concerned. He's on a trip from their home in Florida to visit family in Indiana with his son Kyle, and we're all praying for their safe return and Chris to see a doctor for treatment.
Let's not forget to pray for people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 6/21/09
Praises:
Eric and Heather Zerkle and their children, Casey and Lakin, formally rejoined the church today. They were away for a year in Tucson, and we welcome them back!
John Flowers reported that his son JK's car was totaled after the wreck a week and a half ago. Fortunately JK was not hurt. One of the passengers in the other vehicle had a broken collarbone. Praises that no one was more seriously hurt.
It was, as we said last week, a period for car accidents, especially for the Qualls extended family. Lisa got run off the road and her car had some damage; Tyrone Qualls had someone back into his car with a tow ball; and Lisa's sister-in-law Carol had someone run their car into the fence on their house. We give thanks that no one was seriously hurt.
Praises to Lydia Flowers for all her work organizing the church's decoration for Vacation Bible School this week. Praises also to all her helpers, including John F. the constructor aide. Also to all the workers who are giving their all for VBS. They can still use help and support, don't forget.
Larry Springer offered praises -- his son-in-law passed the state nursing boards, and will soon start at Mary Washington hospital.
Travel mercies for all those on the road, especially the graduates heading to the beach this week. Please bring them back safely.
Prayers:
Claudia McManamey came to Sunday school with her arm back in the sling. She's having a lot of pain in the shoulder again.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for continued prayers for her dad. His brother Paul passed away last Tuesday; her father has been suffering anxiety attacks about his ongoing condition, aggravated by his brother's death. Valerie is spending a lot of time trying to help. Please pray for healing and peace, and strength for the family.
Lisa Glasoe mentioned her dad (Doug), who is facing dialysis and awaiting a decision about a kidney transplant, for which he may not be a good candidate. Please pray for discernment for his medical team and strength for the family.
Anita Hampton asked for prayers for yet another coworker: Chuck, one of the assistant managers. His wife found him passed out at home, and got him to the hospital. He is stable and recovering, but doctors don't yet know why he passed out.
Larry Springer asked for prayers for his daughter, due to deliver on Saturday last. Please join him in praying for a safe birth for both and a healthy baby.
Don't forget the Women of Faith conference on Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1st. Cathy Clement still has two tickets available -- $99 includes lunch both days and full admission, good seats and a bunch of the ladies are going together. Please contact her if you're interested.
Let's not forget to pray for people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.
And don't forget, we are still collecting Bibles and Christian books to send to India to the IBL.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 6/14/09
Praises:
Kim Glasoe offered praises. He had medical tests this past week, and everything came out positive -- that is, negative. Everything is fine!
JK Flowers was in a car wreck on Tuesday, while turning left out of the church lot. John (his dad) offers praises that he wasn't injured. We pray that everyone in the other car is OK.
Phil Ridgway said their dog ran out in the road and got run over. Praise -- apart from some bruising and road rash, the dog is well.
It's been a week for car incidents. Lisa Qualls got run off the road, hit a stop sign and damaged her car's bumper and front end some. Praises -- she wasn't hurt.
Gail Ryder said her daughter Raven was doing better in her recovery from knee surgery.
Lillian Shank offered praises -- her mother is getting around well with her walker, and has actually ventured outside the house some; she is really improving.
Praises for the Ladies' Breakfast on Saturday, and the Ladies' Tea on Sunday, both well attended and by all accounts a whole lot of fun. The Ladies' Ministry is alive and well!
Visiting our church and Sunday School class: the McManameys' good friends the Kennedys -- welcome!
Prayers:
Anita Hampton asked for prayers for two coworkers: her assistant manager Robin and another colleague: Alisha. Robin's mom passed away from long-term complications of diabetes; Alisha's mom also passed away after a long-term illness.
Susan Fitzhugh mentioned her mother, who is 78. She was up on a ladder cleaning gutters, and she fell. Cracked some ribs, but praise the Lord had no other injury.
Rhonda Pierce asked for both prayers and travel mercies for her daughter, who drove down to North Carolina and went through a bad breakup with her boyfriend, then had to drive back 'crying all the way.'
Claudia McManamey reported her shoulder has been healing, and she has more flexibility. Her daughter Dawn is off to Regent University, and their granddaughter is going away with a group to North Carolina State University to gym camp. She's 10, and this is her first away trip; the family is praying.
Angie Blanton asked that we please be in prayer for her dad, Hanible Carver. He is having surgery (prostatectomy) this morning. She adds "We miss you all. We've had a rough couple of weeks. Jason and both boys have been sick and are recovering from viruses, ear infections and sinus infections. Also, please pray for traveler's mercies. We are driving to NC on Friday and back on Sunday. The boys are going to grandma camp. They'll be driving to the other end of NC the following Sunday to stay with the other grandma, and we'll pick them up there the weekend of the 4th."
Mike Benfield's mom is visiting family in the local area all this week. Pray for her safe travels, and for his Dad, alone for the week.
Valerie Dinwiddie's dad is home. He is still having trouble with his breathing; he is using a walker, which is new to him, and he is struggling with weakness and his situation. Valerie also asked for prayers for her father's older brother Paul, who is in the hospital for dialysis and complications of diabetes, including internal bleeding that the doctors cannot yet locate -- he's had four units of blood. Pray for strength for Val's dad and recovery for both.
Kim Glasoe mentioned his friend Dave Lance, recently diagnosed with cancer. Please pray for recovery.
Don't forget the Women of Faith conference on Friday July 31 and Saturday August 1st. Cathy Clement still has two tickets available -- $99 includes lunch both days and full admission, good seats and a bunch of the ladies are going together.

Let's not forget to pray for people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.
And don't forget, we are still collecting Bibles and Christian books to send to India to the IBL.

She was drained of the fluid in the hospital, and should have come home on Sunday or Monday. Please pray for her continual recovery.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 5/24/09
Praises:
Claudia McManamey had her first shoulder surgery this past Friday. She is recovering well, although she wasn't yet up to going out today.
We ask travel mercies for all our Memorial Day travelers.
We give thanks for the servicemen and -women actively defending our country, and we remember all those who have given their lives to preserve our country's liberties.
Anita Hampton and Lisa Qualls offered praises for Phil's brother Tyrone Eads, who had been suffering from a job-related injury and battling his employer. A court settlement has given him a payment for medical expenses and back pay; he had been at the end of his resources.
Prayers:
One of our church members, Toni Reynolds, had a serious car accident on Tuesday evening, and is in Inova Fairfax with a broken collarbone, a dislocated hip, and a broken jaw. She will be released to a rehabilitation center this week. Please keep her, her husband Vaughn, and children Chelsea & Taylor in your prayers for full recovery and for support for the family.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for continuing prayers for her dad's healing. In addition to congestive pulmonary disease and his recovery from lung cancer, he has been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and medicine has not brought it under control yet. His next PET scan will be this coming Tuesday.
Anita Hampton asked for prayers for continued healing: a pallet landed on her right knee, and she's had some bruising, swelling and soreness. Both sisters asked for prayers for their grandmother, Roberta Smalls. Her doctors are concerned about potential for kidney failure and want to put in a portal in her arm in case of a need for emergency dialysis. She's not feeling sick and is resisting. Please pray for her to make the right decision -- she is 85 and very active.
The Bohr/Gillespie clan has had a difficult week. Betty Bohr (Leanne Gillespie's mother) had just returned from traveling to the funeral of her sister when she received a call that a brother had suffered kidney failure. Please pray for recovery and peace for the family.
Raven, Gail Ryder's daughter, is facing knee surgery on Thursday, to repair torn ligaments from sports. Please pray for a strong recovery.
Please pray for our VBS effort (Vacation Bible School). A lot of positions are filled, but we still need more workers, and we also need a way to feed them, and nursery help.
Let's not forget to pray for people in economic distress in our own church and neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.
Announcements: Our Sunday School class has accepted responsibility for one night's meals at the Hilda Barg shelter in early June. We have Tuesday June 9. We've decided on Mexican food, and have started to circulate a sign-up list. John Clement will send around a list to the class emails; to help please reply, or please get in touch with John Clement at john.clement@ed.gov or 202-270-6669.

By the Book Sunday School Class: Prayer Requests for Sunday 5/17/09
Praises:
John Flowers mentioned his son JK, who has graduated from his program in counseling and is engaged! Ms. Crystal Pough is his intended bride, and she has just met the family. JK will be going on a mission trip; please keep him in your prayers as he tries to round up the funds he will need.
He will be returning to the area (and to Potomac Crest) very shortly.
Travel mercies for Rhonda Pierce's husband, on the road this week.
Saturday was very busy at PCBC. Praises for: the youth's yard sale, which raised over $700; the 2nd Annual 90-in-90 motorcycle ride, with fourteen bikes and good weather; and both softball teams hard at play.
Prayers:
One of our church members, Tonja Reynolds, had a serious car accident on Tuesday evening, and is in Inova Fairfax with a broken collarbone, a bruised hip and other injuries. She was fortunate it wasn't worse; she is estimated to have to be in the hospital for two weeks. Please pray for her recovery.
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for prayers for her dad's healing. In addition to congestive pulmonary disease and his recovery from lung cancer, he has now been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. His doctors are trying to decide what medicine he can take.
Claudia McManamey is facing shoulder surgery this coming Friday. She was not feeling well this morning, as though a cold was coming on. We pray she will not have to postpone the surgery; she is in considerable pain.
Also, for the McManamey's grandson Ryan -- his brother said he has been "sick, then not sick, then sick again" for a while, and asked that we pray for his healing.
Please pray for our VBS effort (Vacation Bible School). A lot of positions are filled, but we still need more workers, and we also need a way to feed them, and nursery help. In a related vein, the last meeting of AWANA for the year was this Wednesday, and Sunday May 31 at 4 p.m. is the awards ceremony. Please consider attending and supporting this effort; we registered 109 children, of which 75 or so attend every week.
Please continue to keep Hannibal Carver (Angie Blanton's dad) in your prayers; he is facing surgery to remove his prostate for cancer. Pray for success in treatment. Also, the Blanton's son Jacob is still suffering with headaches (for a month now) and is now scheduled to see a pediatric neurologist in early June.
Lillian Shank mentioned that her mother, Colleen Crocker, is now out of the hospital and recovering at home. Please pray for Lillian's mom and dad.
Let's not forget to pray for people in economic distress right in our own neighborhoods. Also, please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and for God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.
Announcements: The Mission ministry has asked if each Sunday School class will take one night's meals at the Hilda Barg shelter in early June. More details soon. I think our class have Tuesday June 9. If anyone is up for helping with this task, please get in touch with John Clement at john.clement@ed.gov or 202-270-6669.

By the Book Sunday School Class Prayer Requests for Sunday, May 3, 2009
The prayer requests are posted on the blog at http:pcbcbythebook.blogspot.com. Please check them out there so you can see how God is working in our lives!
Praises: Jerry Ellis, recovering from two heart attacks and multiple arterial stents, came to the 8:30 a.m. service today! He is recovering well, but doctors still don't know why he's had pain when the stents went in. Please keep him in your prayers, as well as his family.
Larry Springer mentioned his son, graduating as a nurse and has a job at Mary Washington Hospital.
Andy Wheeler is done with physical therapy for his knee; he's had some swelling, but generally he's continuing to improve.
The Zerkles, visiting last week, put a contract on a house (five doors away from where they used to live!). Pray for everything to go smoothly for them.
Prayers: Lisa Glasoe mentioned her cousin John, living in Kansas City; he has prostate cancer that has spread, and they have done all (radiation, chemo, surgery) they can for him. Doctors give him perhaps two years.
Hannibal Carver (Angie Blanton's dad) also has prostate cancer -- he was to meet his doctor for decisions on treatment today. Pray for success in treatment. Also, Jacob Blanton has been suffering with headaches for three weeks -- pray it's nothing worse than allergies.
Patty Tucker asked that we please add Karen Cohen to our prayer list. She has Stage 4 cancer that has spread to her bones. Karen needs healing of the heart and body.
Philip Ridgway mentioned his brother and his dad. His brother has gone to Los Angeles to help his dad let go of a lot of clutter in his apartment. Pray for the brother's compassion to help reduce tension and stress with his father as they work together -- they need to clean up dad's old place; he has a place to move to, but without all his stuff.
Claudia McManamey mentioned she is facing a rough week -- she has a whole week of night shifts, and won't see her husband pretty much for the week. Also, she asked for prayers for her daughter (Dawn) and her daughter's family (husband John, daughter Catherine, 16)-- they are losing their home due to foreclosure. Their income is 15% of what it used to be. They have a place to move to, but it is very hard for them. Dawn is working and also trying to finish a degree, and is the main source of income for them at this point.
A number of people asked for prayers for people in economic distress. Cathy Clement mentioned a work situation; she has to let an employee go who is a single mother. She's given her plenty of notice and opportunities to go for training and find another job, but it's still hard. John Flowers also mentioned that his employer is having to cut overhead by 10%; they are trying to avoid layoffs, but it's difficult.
Also, we ask for prayers for people going through the H1N1 flu, and for those with children attending schools in Maryland that have had to close -- it's hard on the parents, since they have to take off work to take care of them.
Please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School Class Prayer Requests for April 26th, 2009
Praises:
The Third Annual AWANA Grand Prix ran Saturday 4/25. Twenty-seven cars competed, and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks to all who worked on the event, to T.J. Wheeler who organized, and to Andy Wheeler who worked the track, and to the parents and children who built, sanded, painted and cheered everyone on. Some of the cars are on display in the foyer of the church.
Andy Wheeler is up and about and caneless. He said he's done with physical therapy, and his new knee doesn't creak (unlike the other one). He's not doing the tango yet, but soon...
The Zerkles are back in town! Just a visit for now, but Eric has a job offer at the Pentagon and all four were looking at homes this weekend... Travel mercies for them as they return to Tucson, and we are all looking forward to having them come back to this church home to stay.
Prayers: Jerry Ellis is back home, recovering from a second heart attack this past week. He is doing better, but still has pain, weakness and shortness of breath. They have five stents in an artery! The exact cause of his illness is not known. Keep him, and Jacquie and Jeremy (wife and son), in your prayers.
Gail Ryder's daughter Raven is having a hard time with asthma, especially with all the pollen this season. She is getting a change of medication; please pray for recovery.
Dana Blanton's nephew is straightening out his legal situation with a plea bargain -- there are consequences, but his record will be expunged at age 18. Please pray for him and the family.
Claudia McManamey had both shoulders MRI'ed, and needs surgery for both torn rotator cuffs. At least this is remediable. Her first surgery is May 22.
Phillip Qualls mentioned his youngest brother, Tyrone Eads. He had an on-the-job injury and was fired; he sued and has now one both parts of his court case. Please pray that the employer doesn't continue to appeal and settles -- Tyrone has spent all his savings and needs medical help.
The Benfields' daughter Cassidy is being treated for asthma. She has had a serious, persistent cough for the last 2-3 weeks, and is using both a regular and emergency inhalers. Doctors are trying to see if this is an allergic reaction or something else -- please pray for a cure and for discernment by the doctors.
Bill Blecha (friend of Jim McManamey), who we have mentioned before, is suffering from late stage 2 esophageal cancer. Jim says the chemotherapy is very difficult for him, and he is suffering severe nausea. He has begun to consider discontinuing it. His doctors want him to finish the course of chemo before they will commit to surgery. Please pray for God's guidance and for a cure.
Please keep praying for the whole church, the leadership, and God's will in all the many projects we are undertaking.

By the Book Sunday School class prayer requests for March 29th, 2009
Praises, travel mercies:
Heather Arterburn gave praises for the recovering health of their children, and for the prayers, wishes and help of the church membership during their illness.
We had a well-attended business meeting after services on Sunday. The ministries all reported in; the church is fairly bustling with activity. The finance committee reported that, to this point in the year, donations are keeping up with commitments. We praise God for this church and its members.
The Kramers -- Craig and Eileen -- are on travel to Florida this week.
Mike Benfield's parents are coming into town this week, celebrating a 90th birthday.
The McManameys mentioned that daughter Tara has found a job at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina -- the neonatal ICU job she wanted. Now husband Judd can focus on finishing his degree as he leaves the Marines.
Andy Wheeler is continuing to recover from knee surgery. He had a bad day and a lot of time in the ER, but is home again and working hard on his physical therapy.
Phil Ridgeway and Susan Fitzhugh have survived a hard weekend. He slid his motorcycle, and fell and hurt his shoulder; but it seems to be healing well. Then Susan called him to say that the house was on fire! Fortunately it was only a kitchen fire and it was rapidly extinguished with no significant damage.
Prayer requests:
Jerry Ellis (leader of the praise team at the 8:30 service) has suffered a heart attack, and is recovering at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. Please pray for his recovery and for Jacquie, his wife.
John Clement has joined his wife in the sore jaw department -- he has a bunch of dental work, which began with some extractions and implant work on Monday.
Mike Benfield asked to add his cousin’s daughter (I guess that’s a second cousin), Makenzi Baxter, to our prayer list. She's five years old and has been admitted to UVA Hospital with pneumonia.
Phil Ridgeway also mentioned his mother, Vicky, in the hospital with pneumonia.
Claudia McManamey asked that we keep a family member in prayer -- they are having to file for bankruptcy. Please keep praying for the families in our church that are suffering due to the current economic crisis, in particular folks who have lost their jobs due to layoffs. Our brothers and sisters, and their neighbors and friends, are hurting... The church's Family Needs ministry is working hard to try to help.
Those who came to Potomac Crest from Riverview Baptist will remember the Reverend Clyde Finley, Riverview's longtime pastor. He's had a fall and bruised his hip, and is in the hospital in the Newport News area.
A couple of weeks ago we had mentioned Bill Blecha, friend of Jim McManamey. He was at the hospital having something installed for chemotherapy, and suffered a heart attack (in addition to Stage 2 esophageal cancer). Please pray for God's healing hand, and for the family.
Susan Fitzhugh mentioned a good friend of hers, John Callender, under treatment for skin cancer.
Announcements:
The church is looking for a keyboard or piano player to help with the praise team and the services. Jacquie Ellis will have to care for her husband's recovery, and is having a lot of trouble with one arm and needs to stop playing. If you know someone or are a keyboard person...
Don't forget to contribute a quilt square for Gail Ryder's Family Square Quilt Project. The plan is to sew a quilt, have the men build a frame, and decorate part of the new addition with the quilt. Any moneys not used for the quilt will be added to the Building Fund.
Ongoing Prayers:
Don't forget to pray for our building effort and the faith of our congregation, all of us pulling together.

By the Book Sunday School Class Prayer Requests for March 22nd, 2009
Praises:
Praise for the youth service on Sunday! The youth were -- well, awesome. Thanks to the participants who served and to the leaders who helped this get going. But the most worthy thing was the youth, moved with the spirit and the enthusiasm of speaking to the church.
Andy Wheeler went through his first knee surgery well. By Wednesday he was back home and starting on his physical therapy. Keep praying for all the Wheelers.
Valerie Dinwiddie says her father is getting along OK. Now to see how he reacts to the long-term antibiotic therapy to prevent infection in the tumor as it shrinks -- it has a hole in its center.
Becky Bolton offered praises and thanks to all for a successful move to their new house. She still has boxes and mess and there are always things to fix, but things are better each day.
Susan Fitzhugh was celebrating the start of her new job, this Monday. She now has to stay healthy until May 1, when her insurance kicks in.
Lisa Glasoe asked for travel mercies for Kim, on his way back from Colorado.
Prayer requests:
Heather Arterburn said the kids are doing better, all at home and recovering from what turned out to be a rotavirus infection -- not 100% yet, but keeping food down.
Cathy Clement mentioned her daughter's great-uncle Harry Statham had passed away; he was a great favorite of the family and will be much missed. Veronica asked that we please pray for the family and especially for his wife Elizabeth; they had been together for over 50 years and she will have a difficult adjustment.
Cathy also mentioned she has started wearing a splint for her jaw, an appliance meant to help with temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ). So far she has a sore mouth, but can already see some effects. She hopes the discomfort will go away.
Claudia McManamey is still battling arthritis pain, but she had cortisone shots in both shoulder joints and is somewhat better. Now the doctors are saying she may need surgery for one or both rotator cuffs. Please keep her in your prayers.
Please be in prayer for the families in our church that are suffering due to the current economic crisis, in particular folks who have lost their jobs due to layoffs. Our brothers and sisters, and their neighbors and friends, are hurting...
Lisa Qualls mentioned that Phillip went in for a routine test and they found a mass on his lung. They will be looking at diagnosis and treatment.
Jim and Claudia McManamey's daughter and son-in-law are very much in transition; Judd is working to find a job and in transition out of the Marines, and their daughter is looking for a job as a pediatric nurse. She is hoping she won't have to take a job as a surgical specialist -- it is very hard for her to work in surgery.
Anita Hampton mentioned her coworker Jan, who has been in a serious car accident and was still in the hospital with possible internal injuries.
Becky Bolton asked for prayers for a career choice. She is hoping to study for a career in Nursing at Northern Virginia CC -- she can do much of it online, except for the practical aspects. Currently she is waiting to see if her degree in Health Sciences will satisfy all the course prerequisites or if she will need to take one course, which will mean waiting a full year to start the program. This is a difficult path for the whole family, with Jason's job as youth pastor and her responsibilities to help him and the three kids and the house, and the money is tight... Please pray for God to show her the path, and for the whole family.
Announcements:
The church is looking for a keyboard or piano player to help with the praise team and the services. Jacquie Ellis is having a lot of trouble with one hand and needs to stop playing. If you know someone or are a keyboard person...
The church is also looking for a leader for the missions team. Joe Herod is still trying to recover from his wife's death and needs a break from this responsibility. Please be in prayer for this very important church role.
Don't forget to contribute a quilt square for Gail Ryder's Family Square Quilt Project. The plan is to sew a quilt, have the men build a frame, and decorate part of the new addition with the quilt. Any moneys not used for the quilt will be added to the Building Fund.

Update After Andy's Surgery
Anita received this message from T.J. and asked to have it posted so everyone would know how the Wheelers are doing!
"Surgery was great doctor was very pleased. He was up and walking a little on Tuesday and doing PT. He is now home and on the PT machine at the moment. Still trying to figure the new routine. Took me 3 hours to run and get the meds he needed - not done till 9:15pm!! Just nuts!
We are tired but doing well."
Amen. We're still praying!

By the Book Sunday School Class Prayer Requests for March 15th, 2009
Praises:
Becky and Jason Bolton closed on their new house purchase, and are now moved in. Thanks to all who have helped and are helping.
The ladies' ministry breakfast was this past Saturday, and 22 attended. A great time was had by all. Saturday night was also game night at the Flowers' home, and all who went had great fellowship -- although John Flowers is still not happy at how his wife beat him at dominoes.
Valerie Dinwiddie said her father's CT scan showed the lung tumor had continued to shrink. Now it has a hole in its center, and to prevent infection he is being treated with antibiotics.
Anita Hampton and Lisa Qualls' mother's 70th birthday was recently celebrated. The daughters praise the Lord for their mom's good health.
Benny and Susan Blanton took the Blanton kids to North Carolina to a sister's surprise 60th birthday celebration... Gave Dana and Billy a weekend to themselves, much appreciated.
Prayer requests:
Andy Wheeler's mom and niece were flying in this past Sunday to help out; his knee surgery was Monday at 12:30 p.m. Pray for success, rapid healing, and support for the family.
Patty Tucker asked for prayers for her sister Janice -- the family is going through tough times.
The Arterburns (Heather and Doug) have been battling a virus that has laid all three children low. Ellie was on her way home from the hospital on Sunday, and Liam is in the hospital for a few days yet. Please pray for healing.
Please be in prayer for the families in our church that are suffering due to the current economic crisis, in particular folks who have lost their jobs due to layoffs. Our brothers and sisters, and their neighbors and friends, are hurting...
Claudia McManamey is still battling arthritis pain. Please keep her in your prayers.
Jim McManamey mentioned his friend Bill Blecha, just diagnosed with stage 2 esophageal cancer. Please pray for him, his wife and his family; this cancer is not ordinarily curable. Doctors have put in a stent; chemotherapy and radiation therapy will follow.
Dana Blanton mentioned her mom and her mom's husband are close to a court decision about their nephew, who has been in trouble with the law. They are hoping to be able to keep him at home.
Kevin O'Connor, friend of Phil Qualls, took himself to the emergency room with a persistent stomach ache. He was told he'd had a heart attack, and a couple of days later had triple bypass surgery. He seems to be recovering well.
Cathy and John Clement are in prayer over a decision -- their tenant at the Woodbridge house has said he is buying elsewhere and moving out, and they will have to figure out what to do -- sell the Fairfax place and move to Woodbridge, find another tenant...
Announcements:

Jon Pacella's dad's motorcycle accident...
Folks, most of you know Jon and Annette Pacella. His dad had a nasty spill on his motorcycle this past weekend, and I meant to add something to our prayer requests, but it got stored in the wrong part of my brain and I forgot before I hit send on the email prayer request. Anyhow, here's Jon's update on his father... please keep him in your prayers, and everyone else out there on two (or four) wheels...
I want to thank all of you so much for all of your prayers for my father after his motorcycle accident.
The outpouring of support overwhelms me. When a brother needs some prayer, you guys come through in spades.
My dad is doing alright. He is pretty banged up (chin, knees, fractured elbow), but he is in good spirits (a little groggy from the meds). He thanks all of you for the prayers. He is gonna need them as he starts his recovery. He goes to the orthopedist this Thursday (they want the knee swelling to come down a bit before starting therapy). I attached a pic - he says the chin looks the worst but hurts the least.
Please take a moment to pray for all those who hit the roads on two wheels. There was an accident in Manassas today, a young man in Lake Ridge died this past weekend, and there are more to come, for sure. Pray that people on the road look out for those on motorcycles, pray that those on motorcycles use good judgement (especially when it comes to alcohol).
Again, thank you guys - I love you all. You continue to inspire me.

Praises:
Becky and Jason Bolton close Wednesday on their house purchase -- as someone said at Sunday school, it's good to know they're moving from renting to buying... it means they're staying.
Susan Fitzhugh got the new job she had interviewed for. She has three weeks of leave after quitting her old job at Giant.
Phil Ridgeway said his brother had gone out to the Los Angeles area to help his father move himself and his belongings to an assisted living setting. He offered praises and asked for prayers for the success of the move and bringing his father to the Lord.
Prayer requests:
The Boltons are moving! (see praises, above) They need to pack, move furniture, unpack, paint, organize and take care of children on Wednesday and Thursday... help and prayers very much welcomed.
Andy Wheeler is having surgery on his knee (the first) on March 16th. Pray for success, rapid healing, and support for TJ and Sean.
Belle Spencer, cousin to Patty Tucker, passed away suddenly at age 64. Pray for comfort for Patty and the family.
AWANA had 103 clubbers participating this past Wednesday! This is great work for the Lord that our church is doing. Please pray for it; we need leaders for the T&T group (grade 3 through 6), in particular men to help with this ministry.
Please be in prayer for the families in our church that are suffering due to the current economic crisis, in particular folks who have lost their jobs due to layoffs. There are neighbors and friends hurting...
Valerie Dinwiddie asked for continuing prayers for her father, who has congestive pulmonary disorder in addition to his recovery from cancer -- he had a CT scan this past week.
Jim McManamey mentioned that he'd been in touch with Eric Zerkle; he has a job at Northrop Grumman out in Tucson, but it's a difficult commute and he is hoping for a job closer to home... something might come up at Raytheon.
Announcements:
The Truth Project is meeting every Sunday evening at the McManamey home. Please get in touch with Jim McM. or John Flowers if you want to know more about the course.

By the Book Sunday School Class Prayer Requests for March 1st, 2009
Remember the blog for prayer requests: http://pcbcbythebook.blogspot.com. We are currently adding the prayer requests to the blog, as well as sending them out via email. Eventually, we would hope to move the prayer requests completely to the blog. Please let Mike or John C. know if you are accessing the blog.
Praises:
Heather Arterburn joined the church. We welcome you!
Sparks-a-rama (regional AWANA event) went very well this past Saturday. TJ Wheeler reported that, not only did the Sparkies compete very well and come in second, but they all showed great Christian spirit... All joined in, and some of the Sparkies even joined other teams so they could have a full team and compete... AWANA rocks! Amy Doyle offered praises that there were no injuries. Thanks so much to TJ and the team and all the parents for their work.
Cathy Clement reported her mom has had some head tremors, that a doctor diagnosed as Parkinson's disease and had been treating for almost a year; medicine was totally ineffective. This week she read an article saying that head tremors are not diagnostic for Parkinson's. She's grateful, and mad at her doctor; she will be going to a neurological specialist.
John Flowers reports that, between prayer, medicine and herbal teas, his arthritic knees are doing better. Praises for relief from pain.
The youth completed their 30-hour fast, and the Famine activities were successful and raised funds. We praise our youth, and Jason and Rebecca for guiding them.
Prayers:
Yesterday was the second anniversary of the Arterburn's son (one of triplets) death at age two weeks. They still mourn the loss of Ethan. Please keep them in your prayers.
Claudia McManamey is still hanging in there. Please keep praying for relief from pain and for resolution of the other medical issues so she can resume using her arthritis medicine.
Lisa Glasoe asked for prayers for her dad, Doug, who has kidney disease; doctors have decided to wait a month for a final decision on treatment (surgery vs. dialysis).
Jim McManamey asked for prayers for the wife of a friend. Jim Hunsucker died suddenly of unknown causes, after a few days at a hospital. His wife, Pat, needs our prayers for comfort and guidance.
Mark Doyle mentioned Marine Private Dichosea, under treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism, who committed suicide while at Bethesda Naval Hospital, leaving behind a wife and young child. Please pray for the family.

Please keep praying for God to work a miracle for Tom Carlson's dad. He's had some moderate, continuing progress (some days better than others), but the long-term prognosis is not good.
Don't forget to pray for our building effort and the faith of our congregation, all of us pulling together.
